Does anyone know the weight of a 1940s D-4 Caterpillar, with blade? Since the river level is down, might be able to snag it and drag it up on high ground. Thanks, John in Ne.

Where is the machine? On a river bank or something? I have a 52 D4 and it weighs 16,000 with the blade and a winch.

The cat is on a sandbar, or in a sandbar, long story, on a river, sometimes its washed clean, and others its mired but good, kinda chilly to go up river in a boat right now to check. Was thinking maybe a Stieger or D-7 could pull it up to the bank IF its free of sand. Kind of an odd place, can't see it from the bank, cause of trees, and don't notice it from the water cause of piling. If the weather holds might check this weekend. Everybody needs a lost cause once in awhile. John in Nebr.

I live down here in St. Joseph, MO. What river is it? Surely not the Missouri. You wouldn't need anything as big as a D-7. A D-5 or D-6 for a extra margin would certainly pull it out. Just get some big, big chain. Even with my little D-4 getting chain to hold is the hardest part of pulling something out. It has broken 1/
2 grade 80 pulling out a cement truck before.

Can you take some pics of it and post them on the antique Caterpillar web site? They'll tell you how to get it out.

Yeah, that would be really great. I would love to see what kind of a situation it is in. I love recovery projects like this. How long has it been out there? Do you know why it was there in the first place? Curiosity is getting the better of me.

Its the Missouri River, I can't tell exactly where it is, that would be telling, but, can get to it by looking a bit, know the general area real well. And its been there maybe too long, havta see, and will take pics if its possible, at least the river level is way down right now. John in Ne.

HERE'S AN IDEA, CONTACT YOUR AIR NATIONAL GUARD. THEY ALLWAYS NEED RECOVERY MISSIONS TO TRAIN ON AND WILL USSUALY DO IT FOR FREE. AIR LIFTED D-4 NEEDS TO BE DOCUMENTED WITH PICTURES TOO. AS AN EXAMPLE THE IOWA AIR NATIONAL GUARD JUST AIRLIFTED A BRIDGE FROM AN OLD COUNTY ROAD IN IOWA TO A NEW SITE IN A COUNTY PARK IN MO. JUST LAST WEEK! AND THE BRIDGE STRUCTURE WAS ESTIMATED TO WIEGH OVER 20K LBS.! MORE THAN ENOUGH TO PICK UP YOUR D-4 AND MAYBE PLACE IT IN YOUR YARD EVEN! HOPE THIS HELPS. JIM

How far upstream of St. Joe, MO are you? Do you have a tractor or a dozer you can pull it out with? If you don't let me know and I would be glad to bring a dozer up and help you. At least I could if you knew someone willing to donate lowboy time. :)
