I have a 410 with the 4219 engine. I have noticed recently that the machine smokes upon acceleration or load ( black ) , and it seems to miss a bit. I suspect a bad injector. However this last weekend while loading wood in the bucket the machine seemed to lose power/speed and simply died as if it was out of fuel. I checked tank(OK) and attempted to restart, which it did. I headed for the barn, and managed to get about 1/8th of a mile before the same thing causes it to stop running. Walk to the barn get the other tractor and come back. Start the backhoe again, this time get it to the barn. I immediately think injection pump, so remove the fitting on top of the pump- no sign of the little black particles, which I found on my 450 dozer 2 years ago. My question is , are there any other likely causes for the problem other than the disc in the injection pump coming apart and clogging the return line to tank? The previous owner has replaced the JD fuel filter with a spin on type w/bottom drain for water. I have not checked the filters yet, that is next . I would think that the machine would not start up again so easy if it was a lift pump. May be something in the tank. ( found a mesquite leaf in the tank on my 440 ICD years ago that gave me fits, as it would sometimes lay over the outlet hole in the fuel tank and restrict flow.)
Thanks in advance for your thoughts.

I just replied to the post above yours for the 350 - but it applies to your machine also.

Your machine could run with no fuel pump at all, but not with a bad one - so you might want to check it before suspecting the injection pump. Also check the fuel fitting at the tank bottom.

In regard to the injection pump, there are other things that wear internally besides the plastic governor weight-retainer ring that can cause such problems.
