Have a Case 580-C backhoe that I loaned to a son-in-law to put in a septic system. Got the unit back and went to use it. It is a shuttle shift forward/reverse unit. When I put the shuttle shift lever in the forward position nothing happens with the engine idling (has always lurched forward a tad when doing this). If I raise the RPM's on the engine it will creep forward (reluctantly). If I move the shift lever to reverse it will "lurch" as normal and travel freely. I can't find my book (have had no reason to use it in a couple years) and not really familar with how the shuttle functions. I assume there is some way to check the oil in the shuttle? I didn't have time to do any "looking" when I discovered this , but now I need to use it and don't know what to look for .

Can someone steer me in the right direction? Thanks! bob farrell

If that happened suddenly it is usually the diaphragm spring that is broken or the seal has failed on the forward engaging piston, there is very little that can be done with the shuttle in situ, first check the oil level as suggested,it is done with the engine running on low idle, that ok stop the machine and set the equipment on the ground and secure the parking brake,go under the machine in front of the left back wheel, look up and you will see the linkage to the control valve, check its ok,you will see the clutch cut out solenoid, disconnect the pigtail from the harness to eliminate any electrical fault that could be in the switch, test the machine,if no good a pressure test should be next, connect a 0 to 300psi gauge to test port 1,take a reading with the engine on low idle and the F/R lever in neutral, you should have a minium of 65psi,full throttle a minium of 130psi,on low idle again select forward, you should have a minium of 60psi and on full throttle 125psi,check reverse the same way,if the pressure checks ok the cause of the problem is down to two options, either the diaphragm spring is broke or the clutch discs are bady worn,I would suspect the spring as that can fail instantly, the spring I am referring to acts like a pressure plate to squeeze the clutch discs together,it is usually the cause of the problem you have.Go to the link below to see the test port location,an Allen key is required to remove the plug.

I have a 480D which is very similar to 580C. The shuttle is basically an automatic transmission with forward and reverse. It sounds like you have a forward clutch problem which most likely requires a rebuild. The fluid level dipstick should be located on the right side just above the starter motor.
