So, is it "as-original" 6-Volts, or a 12-Volt conversion?

The bottom line is that primary ignition current (ignition "ON", points CLOSED) should be in the 3 Amps, to NOT OVER 4 Amps range.

The use of a proper ballast resistor(s), along with the specific coil's primary resistance determines this current.

Much less than 3 Amps, you'll have a weak spark, over the 4 Amp range, point life will be SHORT, and the coil will run hot and probably "give up" before it's time, as well.

If the tractor is still set up 6 volt, there should be no need for a resistor. If it is still a 6 volt, the resistor is probably dropping you down to 2.5-3 volts.
If it has been converted to 12v,check your coil,it may have an internal resistor, which does not require the use of a resistor.

ALL 8N's, up to serial # 263844 HAVE a resistor... in reply to MSM, 11-19-2007 07:01:17
ALL 8N's, up to serial # 263844, the first "side-mount" distributor tractor, HAVE a ballast resistor FROM THE FACTORY.

They have the goofy "square-can coil" sitting on top of the camshaft-driven distributor.
