I bought a cat 225 51U last weekend at a auction i was just wondering the reliabty of this machine. How is it compared to the newer cat excavators. Is there any major things on them that gives alot of trouble?

Those and the 235, have ran a few of each, but as was said, they must have been pretty good, as a lot of contractors had them in the area where I worked back then, and either they did overhauls on them, kept them running, or logged in quite the hours. The 245 was popular with the big contractors, need a beam trailer to haul it, but I've seen a lot of those in service, even today. I ran the 225 & 235, hauled both, but did notice they had a decent reputation with the contractors.

The 200 series are bulletproof old machines Pete. A lot depends on how much has been taken out of it with nothing put back in, in recent years. Pin and bushing wear and cracks in the boom and stick are the most obvious problems. All are repairable but cost money. Don't let them get too bad or major dammage like broken parts can occure. They are not as comfortable and fuel efficient as the newer hoes but they can still do a good days work. Fix them right and they stay fixed.

I have heard that the problem with the 225's was that some of them used a 3208 engine. Some people aren't real fond of 3208's. Others really like them. Dave
