Have a 1963 1010.Worked fine till a few weeks ago. Right steering clutch came out of adjustment. Pull lever all the way back before clutch disenges and the brake locks up immmediatley. Makes a groaning sound and boggs the engine down. Have tried adjusting things, no luck. Looks like water may have gotten in. Left side works fine. Also tensioners are blowing seals out, would like to convert to a mechanical tensioner any advice would be appreciated. Is it possible to put rubber tracks on this machine?

I have had good success by tying back the clutch handle until the fingers are depressed and using the machine on something like clearing brush. It is a pain to operate with one clutch, but such a pleasure when the locked side opens up.

Some machines had holes in the pads so you could bolt rubber blocks to them. You could look into tracks like used on a mid. size excavator but I think it would be very costly to convert and the tracks wouldn't last long unless you were always in soft dirt. Case makes a crawler with a rubber track option. Dave

Water usually doesn't change the adjustment unless it was wet for a long time and the clutch plates swelled or rusted up and got thicker. You need to pull the inspection plate off and look inside. It's just a automtive type clutch. Check to see where the pressure-plate fingers are - and if they are being pushed down when you pull the steering lever. If they are going down but it doesn't release, then the clutches are stuck. If they are not - you've got a linkage problem. If the clutch fingers are stuck down and don't come back up even though the linkage and throughout bearing is not in the way - then you've got water and rust problems. In regard to the track tensioners - the original little rubber seals are not adequate - especially when the cylinders wear a bit. If you recut the groove in the adjuster piston - and put a 350C type seal - it will hold much better. Rubber track? Not my area of interest or expertise -it's the last thing I'd want on a 1010. The tracks would probably cost more than the crawler. Cletrac offered the OC3s with rubber tracks for awhile and they were awful.
Lots of Bombardier crawlers around with the rubber tracks - my neighbor has a dozen of them.
