Had a brain cell short out, anyway, my Detroit Diesel 3-53 still won't shut down.
It's a late 50s early 60s model.
Anyone have a manual for this thing?

Shuting down 3-53 in reply to Thomas R. Spivak, 11-27-2007 17:35:09
Fixed the the shut down problem today. As Jerry sugjested, there was a broken pin on the shut down lever inside the governor that pushes the throttle down past the lowest idle and basically stalls the engine, from what I can tell this took care of it and all is OK now. Thanks to everyone for their input.

Yeah, I have 3-53 manuals. I've got two backhoes with 3-53s. What do you want to know?

I need details on Governor, I can't get this thing to shut down unless I use the blower shut off. The gov. lever was stuck when I got it so I took the idle screw out and sprayed WD 40 in the hole and slowly worked the lever back and forth until it moved full range, but it still won't shut down. Idle is set to as low as possible and still keep it running. Engine runs perfect otherwise.

This very simple. Its probably the cable adjustment. Go to the governor housing ,remove the regular kill cable, not the emergancy cable , start engine ,try to kill manually at the gov housing, if it works, the cable is out of adjustment, if it dont it probably the rack, injector adjustment.

I knew a guy that had 6-53's in his excavators and they had an emergency only shut off cable that was basically a positive air shut off. There must be something that isn't letting the fuel shut off at the injection pump. Dave

The shut off is on the governor not the injector pump, next to the throttle lever.
It has no cable on it at the moment and if moved through it's full range, it does nothing.
