I have a dozer with aftermarket rollers by Simmell (Berco). They use "duo-seal" seals two metal seals, each seal is surrounded by a rubber seal/donut that expands a bit when the assembly is pressed together. I am wondering if this type needs to be cemented when it is installed. Mine were leaking on one side of one roller, but the seal rubber seems almost new, and the metal faces are fine to. What lubricant should I use? I was told 30w motor oil?

Thousands of rollers have been reshelled at my place over the years and in order to avoid comeback claimes cleaning the components is of the upmost importance, cleaness and dryness is the key for no leaks,if using old seals they must be kept in sets as they were removed, after cleaning everything and making sure there is no nicks or blurrs mount the rubber ring on the steel sealing ring and make sure it is not twisted, there is a tool for to install the seals but you can do it without it,do not use screwdrivers or the like to get the ring past ridge just press them with your hands, put one drop of oil on the sealing surface of one ring and spread it round with a piece of cling film or other lint free material, put on the flange with a new o"ring on the shaft lubed with liquid soap,to fill the roller there is a tool that screws into the shaft as in the picture at the link below.

Thanks for the great tips. My rollers don't have grease fittings on the shaft, they have an allen plug in the center of smaller diameter of the roller shell. The allen is a little mashed, so I was thinking of filling with oil before putting on the last seal. Does anyone know where to get new seals?

SAE30 diesel engine oil is what we used, the oil has to be fluid to get carried aroung the shaft, the assembled roller is usually filled half way with oil,I will leave it to yourself put in our case all plugs would be taken out regardless, as I said before to avoid comeback, any track shop should be able to supply seals and new plugs.

If you have a leakage problem so that the oil does not stay there long enough, you can also use Lubriplate 5555, which is a white grease that is also specified for some such rollers.

Clean all the dirt out and put them together dry. Fill roller half full of engine oil.
