The old coupling started slipping so bad it ate itself up. Not able to buy new parts I had a machine shop build a new coupler. After installation, within 2 minutes time of running to test the assembly it will not stay engaged but splits apart. I feel the spring is not the "thing" that keeps this assembly together other than bringing the 2 parts together. Anyone have any ideas? Other than scrapping the machine?

Some more info would be helpful. I wouldn't scrap a machine over a hydraulic connection. There are lots of different couplers available. Where is the coupler? and what is it used for? Dave

On the 500C dozer the hydraulic pump is located in front of the engine and bolted directly to the frame cross-over. There is absoultely no adjustment as 2 bolts go through 2 holes and are a precise tight fit. A small 4 or 5 inch hex shaft screws to the end of the pump. There is a washer that lets a spring be put between the pump washer and the coupling, which puts nominal pressure to the 1/2 coupling end to push it to mate with the other coupling 1/2. This other coupling half is welded to a plate which is bolted onto the damper/pulley of the flywheel on the front of the engine crank. Originally I found that the 4 front engine mounting bolts were loose. That, I thought, tore up or finished off the original coupling. A small machine shop thought they could just put another cut into the coupling and it would be good. Not so. It didn't last a few hours and was completely ate up. The original parts are not completely available and the parts that are, are cost prohibitive especiall not knowing what else I may be confronted with to make this run. I was able to buy the original shaft and had a machine shop make a new set of couplings, weld 1/2 to the mounting plate as in the original and cut a hex bore to the other 1/2 for a slip fit to the shaft as in the original. Now the same problem with the new coupling.... it won't stay engaged. In starting the motor, after 2 minutes the coupling jumps apart. The parts are not rounded off, the machine shop says they duplicated the hardness to the parts the same as the original. If alignment is the problem, there is no adjustment. Pump is mounted to the frame. Engine is mounted to the frame. Shaft is mounted to pump. Plate with coupling is mounted to engine. All that is in-between is the spring loaded coupling. The spring I'm told is so that the coupling can be spread apart to install a new belt with-out disassembly of the front radiator(s) and hydraulic pump and lines. I don't think the new coupling/shaft assembly can be the problem but? what else could it be?

I went through a similar problem with my 500E - the coupling was heavily worn. I was able to weld it up and mill the slots back.
Your problem may still be with the alignment, and it is adjustable. I don't have the book here, but some pretty close tolerances are listed in the manual. The drive plate on the crankshaft pulley can move slightly in the holes. I mounted a dial indicator on the front frame and then indicated the od of the coupling. That's the easy part. While the pump mounts tight to the flat plate, the flat plate itself can move in its bolt holes. I then mounted the indicator base on the engine pulley and kept spinning the engine and adjusting the plate until the coupling/crankshaft ran true to the hole in the center of the pump plate (pump removed). It was a pain as every time I tightened the plate, it would move. It took a good 3 hours to get it where I liked it, and that was with no radiator or anything else in the way!
