My D3 starts and runs beautifully for about an hour then it gets hot and refuses to move until it cools off. (79u). when it cools it will go again for about another hour. Anyone ever had this problem? Need help, it is an old dozer but has lots of power and runs great until it gets hot.

Just a thought, but is the transmission vent blocked? You could check the trans. oil level. On mine you check it when it's running. Bob/Ont will be able to help you out. He knows these like the back of his hand and has helped me out a lot and saved me a ton of money. Dave

Thanks, Dave:
The trans gets hot and causes the motor to heat up. The filter has been cleaned, the oil level is full when cold but is overfull when it gets hot.We have put a new pump in the trans, changed oil and this did not help. Thanks, June

June, get a 600 PSI gauge and a hose. Check the trans pump pressure in all gears at full throttle and low throttle. Should be around 300 PSI and hold about 270 at low throttle. If it's low in one gear and good in others you have a leaking clutch piston. Most over heating is from lack of oil flow through the torque converter. Since you replaced the pump the most likely places to leak are seals on tube to valve and any seals under valve. If they are good, clutch piston. The "works good when cold and fades out when hot" says a leak someplace to me.

Thanks Bob,
Would the leak cause the oil level to rise when the trans is hot? Is it causing the torque converter to stop dumping?

June, the oil level raises some when the oil heats up. The torque heats up the oil in it when it works hard. The system is designed to have adequate flow through it to carry away this heat to the cooler. The cooler is in the bottom of the rad and two large hoses connect it to the trans. First thing to do is work the tractor and when it gets hot take the engine side guards off and feel the hoses carefully to see they are both hot. Then test pressure at plug under the trans cover. Small round plate look for a 1/8" pipe plug marked P1.
