I am currently looking at buying a 977L with ripper. What should I be looking for on the undercarriage? Sprockets and pins look decent. How do you check the rollers and rails for wear? Also, what else should I look at? How do you do a stall test and check the steering clutches? I know my way around rubber tired equipment but am new to crawlers. Any info would help. Thanks.

I work with heavy equipment everyday and I have found the best way is to call your local dealer and have the service department send someone out to inspect. Will probably cost around $150.00 but will be the best money you spend on machine. I have had a couple machines inspected and they find things I would never have even thought to check but which can cost quite a bit. It"s the only way with the cost of undercarriage and repairs now days. My John Deere 850C is needing undercarriage soon and it is going to cost me over $30,000.00.

Get it warm and see if it will steer easy in both directions with a light toe pressure on the peddals. Check all oil levels, have seller top them up and look for leaks at sprocket seals. Make sure the idlers aren't coming off the ends of the track frames when tracks are tight. Put a crowbar behind the sprockets and make sure they have no side movement. The sprocket teeth shouldn't be sharp at tips or the undercarrage is worn out. Look for wear in loader frame pin and bushing wear. If you can work it for a couple of hours and see how it does. Come on back with your thoughts before you buy.
