Bought an H875 Insley Excavator w/ a 4-71 Detroit. The previous owner change a cracked head, one injector, and water pump. Found out after the fact that he did not set the injectors when he changed the head. I'm looking for info on how to do this because the exhaust needs cleaned up (smokey).

Thanks! - cg

Buy yourself a detroit manual,I see a lot of them as CD-Roms on Ebay now. There are many different injector numbers and different governor set ups to do it without a book or print out. I work on Railroad maintenance equipment and just did a 4-71 a few months ago, I am in the middle of pulling a V6-53 out of a crane right now, there are a few things to set, the procedure isn't that difficult. You should set the governor the valves the valve bridges if it is a four valve head and the injectors. I deal with Western Branch Diesel, they still have a lot of guys that know the 2 Strokes my local Detroit dealer is into Mercedes and series 60 electronic engines they don't want to be bothered with the old stuff. Just ask if you have any questions. T.J.

if you mechanically enclined enough to do this with instructions, without no knowledge of this engine, I would purschase a IT shop manual for a super 99 oliver ,this has the same engine, and is detailed

I agree that the IT Super 99 shop manual is very good for the 71 Detroits. I use one for my compressor with the 3-71.
