I"m looking at a Cat D3B LGP. How do you check to see if it"s pushing as hard as it should?
How do you know if it"s slipping? It doesn"t have a clutch like the 450D I had. What should I inspect besides the undercarriage? I have this week end to try it out. Thanks For Any Help

I would impress opon you to contact your local Cat dealer and have a field service tech come over to inspect the D3 dozer. It will cost you a couple hundred dollars but the information you will receive will make it worth while, with this information you can determine if the cost of repairs in undercarriage is worth purchasiing this machine. New Undercarriage parts, new rails using old pads, rollers, building up old idlers etc, parts only with out labor will cost $10,000.00, really no BS. It may be worth while to rent a dozer if you only intend to use it for a short time.

I have a 931B which is the loader version. My machine has the 3 forward and 1 reverse transmission. The 3 forward and 3 reverse transmission uses the same torque converter. Read the posts on here about the JD trans. problems. The Cat is a full power shift in all gears and I think is a better transmission with less problems. When shifting between forward and reverse, it should have a bit of a jump. Try out the brakes. They are most likely dry brakes but it should steer, without having to stand on the pedals, with only moderate pressure. See how far down the pedal goes. If it goes down to the floor might just mean it needs adjustment but could also mean replacement may not be far away. I adjusted mine (I don't think they ever were) and it was night and day better. According to the manual, in second gear you should be able to hold it back at full throttle with the brakes. Some people aren't really fond of the 3204 engine and some like it. It's not Cats best engine but it's still a good engine. Don't let it idle for more than a few minutes to warm up. I was told idling 3204's is especially hard on them. In first gear and maybe second, depending on what type of ground you're on, you should be able to spin the tracks if you try to push too much. Check the engine oil level before running it and then run it for a while to let everything warm up and try it out. Then check the oil level again. Cat has stronger track frames than JD. I know a guy with a JD 450D dozer and 951 Cat loader. The Cat is bigger and older but he says is a better built machine. He wanted to buy my machine. The person who could really help you is Bob/Ont. He knows these machines inside out and has helped me out a lot. There is a lot of info in the archives on here about D3B's/931B's. Cat manuals are better than JD manuals. D3B's could be built in Japan or the US. Same machine though. I hope I helped some. Now that I've fixed everything on mine, I like it. I need undercarriage but it will work for quite a while yet. Dave
