Have question concerning finial drive, drive pinion end play. Drive pinion seals were allowing oil to leak into steering clutch housing causing brake to not work properly. Pulled finial drive and installed new seals, bearings, (cones and cups). Snap ring on end of drive pinion shaft fits tightly in groove holding bearings and pinion snugly. Manual says to install shims obtaining .0000 to .0030 end play. Without any shims end play is .0440. Could the bearing quill face need machined down? I believe this to be the reason the seals leaked to begin with. Have any of you John Deere mechanics ever had this problem.

Sounds like the problem could be the pinion location, not the ring gear bearings.

I've never seen this before..Are the bearing cups and cones from Deere?? I wonder if someone put different bearings in it , thinking they were the same..Normally I would knock the bearings out and call a bearing/seal distributor to get identical number bearings..Maybe they're not the right ones..You can either mill the bearing quill or shim the bearing cup if they prove to be the right bearings..

Roy,That is a good possibility. I took the numbers off of the old cones and cups and ordered the new ones from a bearing supplier. The difference would have to be in width of the cups. Would you happen to have the manufacture, and or numbers for these cups and cones? I hate going to JD and giving $50 for a $6 bearing.

CHinNY thank you for taking time to present me with this information. These are the exact numbers of the bearings I removed, and installed. Looking in my bearing manual I see that a LM501314 cup would move the pinion towards the bearing cap .0737. Then I would have to shim @.030. I could, as stated earlier, install shim @.044 between bearing cup and cap, or mill bearing cap. My concern is, that one way moves the brake drum out, the other moves it in. Could this cause a problem? I have also installed new pinion. It miked the same as the old one. I guess I am the only person to have ever had such a problem?
