I don't usually work on crawlers, just wheel tractors, but things are slow in the shop. I have a request to free up a stuck left track clutch on a 1010 Deere. I'll have to take the track off as far as I can see. Any advice on track removal? A master link? Dos and don'ts? I haven't said I'd do it yet.

It isn't rocket science, if turn wrenches for a living, you can do it. Most likely it is rusted up due to moisture, assume that the clutches will need to be replaced and some rusty components freed up/cleaned up. There are some tricks to adjusting and such that would be easier to do if you had a manual, but if you post question/s here, you will get the answer as well.

I have a couple 420s. BTW, their track pins are the same distance apart as the 1010 (pitch?). I never looked at a 1010 but the 420 sprockets have holes in them. To get the master pin out of my tracks I welded a short piece of 3/4" rod to the top of a 12 ton bottle jack, then used two pieces of threaded rod a couple feet long and put one thru a hole in the sprocket and the other outside of the track, bolted a plate near the end of each of the rods and pushed the pin out with the jack. You need a piece of pipe over the head of the pin so it has a place to go.

(release track tention )Your track will have a master pin which will need removed.Try to set the master pin at or close to the rear of the drive sprocket so you track is easier to handle. Without proper lifting tool the easiest way to remove the drive sprocket next (which can be done by lifting some weight off the sprocket when nuts are removed. Remove the bearing cap thats on the out side of the final drive housing, remove retainer and bearings then remove final drive housing ,draw bar bolts and two bolts on the under carage side of the housing must also be removed. From the top opening plate under the seat loosen the brake band then the clutch /brake assembly can be removed
