I just got an older 931 that has difficulty steering to the left. The brakes pedals come thru the floor board. Any idea of what the fix is?

Dean, I take it that you can steer left by standing on the peddal very hard. The clutches are released by trans pump pressure(300PSI) and require about 200PSI of the 300 to get clutches released. The most likely cause could be a problem in the steering valve mounted on the arm connected to the brake rod. Peddal opens this valve to release clutch as you step on brake. To check it get a JIC fitting that will fit hose end going through steering clutch case to Release Cyl. Connect a 600Psi gauge and hose to it. Run machine in neutral and step on brake to read pressure. Check both sides to compare. You should get 300 psi fully depressed. The brakes might need adjustment too, there are a pair of Diamond shaped covers held on by 3/8" bolts over the adjusters. Tighten up adjusters(9/16"hex) all the way and back off 2 turns for a start. The dry brakes will heat up if too tight and start to drag. If this happens just back off 1/6 turn at a time untill they run free and peddals are even. Come on back with results and we will talk more if need be.

I have the same problem, but was told you could put a couple of gallon"s of fuel into the case and run for a while. then drain the fuel, but check your plug first to make sure you can take it out.
do not know if it is the right thing to do though.

John, I wouldn't do it with the fiber plates the 931/D3 have in the dry clutches. If you have been adding a lot of oil to the bevel gear compartment the band might be slick. Take out the plugs and check. It would be better to take off cover and wash down with varsol than put fuel in there. If they are dry I would check brake adjustment and that you are getting enough release pressure to the cylinders. If you have the old 3For 1 Rev trans there is a suction screen under a large plate on the upper RH rear of trans. Clean that out. Later Bob

John, since you have a 931B not a 931 Disreguard all I said in previous post. Your problem is likely a failed ball bearing on the end of the steering valve spool. The steering valves are mounted on the steering clutch case under the seat. Take out battery and battery support to get in from the back. Try to take pic or make drawing of how lines are connected to valves for reassembly. Change bearing all seals and anything else that is worn. Would be good to do both sides.

Hey Bob, I have a brochure for a 931C and the 3 forward, 1 reverse transmission is still offered as an option. I also have another Cat sales brochure that says the 3F,3R trans isn't needed unless you're working on lots of inclines or need extra power in reverse. I had the screen on my machine checked when the engine and trans. were out. It was clean. They said that was a good sign the trans was good. Dave

You want to believe it Dave. Even harmless looking crumbs of black stuff signal rebuild time. That is clutch plate lining starting to deteriorate and come off. The trans still works okay but they make steering difficult between cleanings and aggrivate you into repairing it. The 1R/3F is a good transmission, less problems than the 3R/3F It has a complicated shifter to give U patern that leaves a bit to be desired.
