I bought a 955 cat, serial # 12A6442. Steering clutches are stuck. It looks like the loader frame has to come off to get the clutches and ring gear assembly up and out of the machine. Does anyone have a service manual that walks you thru the removal of the frame and clutch assembly. I have a book on a D4 dozer that shows how to remove the clutches and ring gear but doesn't take into account the loader frame. Any help would be appreciated.

Just fill the compartment about half full with some fuel oil or solvent or gasoline and drive it around some trying to steer and they should break loose if it is just oil holding them together or put it on a hard pull like against a bank or on a plow and just keep wiggling the levers alittle till they come loose. lots easier than removing them.

There is no such service manual for the 12A. Just the regular D4 manuals and the 12A parts book.
I seem to recall that if you strip everything off the case cover it will slide out the back giving you the required access. Can't remember if you had to unbolt and jack up the rear of the loader frame or not. Did see one where they torched out the rear cross member and welded it back in when done only to find out that wasn't necessary. Sorry I can't be more specific.

the D 4 book should give you enough info. my 12A book got dambp and the pages stuck and. Yes you can remove the clutches without removing the loader frame but it will make you say bad words. they come out one at a time
