I have a 1952 D47U cat dozer. I am trying to convert the generator from a 6 volt to 12 volt. I have changed the windings on a 1960 70D grader gen. with 2 brushes and it works fine. The D4 has 3 brushes and the output is very earatic, jumping from 18 volts to 3 volts and anywhere inbetween. I have burned up several voltage regulators. The generator is gear driven so installing a alternator is going to be dificult. Can anyone help??? Thhanks

you can add an extra sheiv to your crankshaft pully and fabricate a mount. eith leave the generator in the housing or replace it with a plate. I have done this several times.

Thanks for the reply. I might end up doing something like that if I can't figure it out. Thanks again.
