I have an Allis Chalmers HD5 with the Detroit 2-71 engine. Does anyone have a good used muffler or know where I might find a replacement? Mine is pretty well shot and don't really want to try and fab one if I could locate a good one.

I just remembered that HD-5 has the weird old style oval muffler, I had prevoiusly taken that thing apart hulled it out, welded a patch plate on it (mine was rusted out in the bottom) and a section of muffler tubing coming vertically out, essientially I made the old muffler into a exhaust manifold then bolted on a modern manifold. The whole remade muffler and manifold should cost less than $100 and maybe an hour or two of labor. Johnny

Rick, what I did a few years ago was first measure the O.D. of the manifold. Then went to Tractor Supply and found a nice big quiet muffler with this same I.D. on the intake side of the muffler. Bought a clamp and a flipper cap and bolted it on. I didhave to cut my hood slightly to make this work, but it turned out real nice. You could also order one through the male or internet as most mufflers have the dimensions included in the description. Johnny
