Cat D6 - basic questions?

Hello, I usually hide over on the Farmall board but I've heard tell of a D6 available locally and had a few questions. It uses a pup start but otherwise I have no idea how old it is. What is the approximate weight of this machine? Where is the serial number located? How much (for parts) does it cost to rebuild the pup motor? Other than the basics like tracks is there anything else to look at. The current owner is planning on scrapping it but says apart from the pup motor it works well. Might this machine have any value? I'm going to go and have a look at it sometime soon, who know's what I'll find. Many thanks, tractorsam

Tractorsam,

The 9U's are a really nice old machine that are very durable. I am the guy who is in the middle of taking the final drives apart. If you have a good assortment of hand tools, you can do most anything on them. From my limited experience, I feel that undercarriage is the primary item of concern. Measure it up, get pictures, and we'll let you know what we think. Just don't let it go to scrap- I need more parts for mine! I'd like to have that wet clutch!

Thanks for all the great info so far. Hopefully I'll get a look at this machine tomorrow. It'll be more out of curiosity than anything else but I do hate to see good parts/machines being scrapped. tractorsam

Well, I went and had a look at the machine today. It's neither in great shape nor terrible shape. Over all it's an old tractor that's been used (but doesn't seem terribly loose) but not too badly abused unlike a lot of equipment in this part of the world. The right hand side track has really good grousers and chain as well as a good sprocket and fair rollers, the carrier rollers are a bit worn though, and the idler isn't bad. On the LHS the chain and grousers are worse but not totally spent, the grousers have been welded once but the bushings in the track haven't yet been turned. It has a bull blade on it and pans underneath, also comes with a root rake. The serial number as well as I can see is 9U24746. Any ideas on the year? The fellow who has it now says it is an ex - military machine. tractorsam

Definitely a good model, having an oil clutch is a plus, there were a high number of 9U's built 1947-1959 this one sounds like it's worth taking a closer look at. You would hate to see it go to scrap, when someone would take an interest in repairing one that is a nice size tractor for a farm or other use.

Also hate to see that root rake go to scrap, the 9U is a 74" gauge tractor, same as a D7, not sure if the push arms on that rake would have any length issues to cross over to a D7 tractor, but I'd sure like to find one going for scrap around here for my D7 !

That would be a 1957 production model. Should have oil clutch and cover plate on the bell housing to accommodate direct electric start. Is it cable blade or hydraulic? Very good and desirable machines as Bob/Ont states.

They are good old machines. Try to pull it to start if anything big enough is near by. You might have a good one there.

Serial no will be on the back of the left steering clutch housing,if the tag is missing scrape off the paint and you will find it stamped into the casing, you could convert it to direct electric start.
