Had this problem, since injector pump had just been gone though and installed by a mechanic, we deduced it was transfer pump which we had rebuilt at CAT and will soon be installing. After reading Richard Ellis /Old Magnet/Hectorgemme post on this topic back in december 07, wonder if pump o-rings were not installed properly. My question is can you tell if diesel is leaking into the oil pan by looking behind inspection plate at base of filter housing if it is coming from the injector pump/filter housing o-rings? If so, must engine be running? I"d like to avoid another oil change if transfer pump is not the cause. Thanks Mark

Yes, you would be able to see fuel leakage from a bad seal if you remove the filter side cover. The actual path for the fuel to reach sump is much lower down though, around the accessory drive.
If you remove the pump to replace seal, depending on tractor serial number there is another seal at the other end of the passage that should be replaced also. The second seal would allow fuel to leak into the governor and overflow the injector pump housing sump. Both seals are a #8B4967
Leak check should be done both with pressure (engine running) and static (overnight)

A lot of transfer pumps get rebuilt unnecessarily.
If the pump seal goes bad fuel will show up at the tell tale drain line that drains the pump seal cavity.

Thanks for the reply. We are not seeing contamination into the govenor/pump lubricating oil. The old govenor shot craps and came apart a while back and we replaced with a different pump/govenor unit. Had new seals put in at that time, so hopefully the transfer pump was the problem since the expense to repair has been already incurred. Cat Mechanic who repaired said the shaft had to be replaced in the pump so it sounds like it was near needing it anyway and the 933 machine is very nice and worthy of it. Did not realize there was a drain on the transfer pump to check for leakage.

Have had that problem on few dozers, 1st an old TD15, it was leaking thru an o-ring on the transfer pump into injector pump housing into crank case, no problems running, just when sitting. Shut off fuel valve at tank. 2nd ACHD21 an injector return line leaking inside the valve pan cover dumping deisel into top of head then flowing into crankcase. 3rd was, pulled my fuel shut off to stop engine position and then pushed it back into run position after engine had stoped. The rack was open to idle run and the metering valve was open and it gravity drained into injector pump housing and filled crank case. After 2 15 gallon oil changes, I shut the tank valve off every nite and and have had no problems with oil dilution. On my AC pumps, they will leak if they are not in shut off and have a gravity head pressure from the fuel tank. Bob Ohio
