We're getting ready to repower a Northwest dragline model 95. Currently it has a Murphy engine in it but we are wanting to repower it with a Cummins NT855 engine out of a Michigan 275B loader. The problem is, we cannot determine what flywheel it needs to hook up to the twin disc clutch. Does anyone have any experience with this? Any help would be appreciated.

Im kinda with Wayne on this one, Unless the Murphy is beyond help Id rebuild it! That being said Im thinking the Cummapart is at least twice the power of the Murphy and about a thousand RPMs faster turning which means you'll either have to have a much smaller tailshaft sprocket in the primary drive to slow it down which also translates to even more power to the works! or run at half throttle and hope that its got enough low end grunt to do the job, I dont know the exact numbers on either engine, it might be that it will work...might not..Id be interested to know how you make out...Good luck and keep us posted...OCG

We got 'er done, as Larry the Cable Guy would say. Thanks for the help guys. Thought I would post some after pictures for ya. It only took 258 man hours of labor (WOW) and she purrs like a kitten.

Question, is the machine running a Murphy with a converter or is it direct drive and your wanting eleminate that setup and put the Cummins in it with a converter? Either way I don't understand why your wanting to repower the old girl and get rid of the Murphy since their nearly bullet proof when their build and maintained right...which isn't that hard to do. I've seen them still going with the customer running 90wt to keep oil pressure up enough to keep running. Seen them with the sides of the valves worn square, no taper left, and pulling into the head above the seat and still going. The one with the valves the customer knew for a fact that it hadn't had anything done to it for over 25 years. (Should have seen the look on his face when Dad got done with it and it tried to pull the machine in the swamp when he hooked a stump.) Add to that the fact they've got about the best lugging ability you could find, which you need if your draglining, and they just can't be beat. Granted your looking at somewhere in the neighborhood of $20,000 to rebuild one right (MP22 was the last we did) but look what you get for the price. That said, remember the Murphy is only turning in the neighborhood of 1200 RPM wide open. The gearing in the gearcase, or the setup in the converter, is sized for that speed. If your wanting to run the Cummins your gonna have to govern it back or your line speed is gonna be through the roof. Then there's the question of with the Cummins running that slow is it still gonna have the required HP and torque to handle the load? That's always been one of the problems with swapping out any of the ME or MP series Murphys, they develop peak HP and torque at such a slow RPM it's nearly impossible to match anything up in their place without a drastic change in speed. Beyond saying that here's a link to a site I found showing the SAE flywheel and flywheel housing setups. If you need adapters you may be able to get them from a place called Guardian Industries. Good luck, I'd be interested to know how the swap works if you can get everything to work out right. All the NW machines I've ever worked on had Murphys and the only one I know of in this area without is a 190D that belongs to a customer of ours that has a 12V71 Detroit. Don't you know that's gonna be a screaming fool when we get it put together for him.

I assume you have an SAE flywheel.
Click on the link, and below the 1st tables, you will see links to other arraignments such as over center clutch. After clicking on the one that fits your needs, you will see a Drawings link in the lower right. This will give the dimensions of the std flywheels.
