I have a Case 450 dozer (SN:3057247) with a bad alternator. Does anyone know of an automotive replacement that will fit, or do I need to have mine rebuilt?

Personally, I really dislike the one wire alternators. They tend to need to be spun to near redline RPM to start charging, or they draw too much current when the machine is shut off (which flaw you have depends on the regulator chosen). I just removed one of these from my forklift because it drew enough current (75 ma) to drain the battery after about 2 weeks of no use. There is a reason why GM used a separate wire to run the regulator off a switched source.

I like the CS130 alternator, these can be had from the junkyard for $15.00 Snip the plug that came with the car. Hook up the main power wire to the output stud and one more wire to a switched source through a 4 watt bulb and you have a much better and smaller alternator that draws less than 1 ma when the machine is shut off.a

If it is the same as a 450C, it could have a bad pressure switch. In this case, neither the alternator nor the hour meter will work.

If it has alternator should be motorola 8AR20262F, Case # R30818. Also they were available with a generator delco # 1100404, Case # D27034. My books show all parts available for either to rebuild.

Numbers off of the altenator, or a photo, please!

Do you know if it is a Motorola, a Delco, or another make?

It has a Motorola voltage regulator on the back of it, so I would assume that it is probably a Motorola alternator. The numbers can not be read from the tag.
