I have a Ford 555A (or B?) that I have owned for several years. It is a power reversing transmission. Never had any major issues. I used it a couple of weeks ago and had no problem. I went out to use it a few days ago and it won't move. Never even threatens to move in any gear. I pulled out the manual and looked at the other posts here for hints. I drained the transmission and replaced the filter. Fluid was clean....no garbage in it. Purchased a gauge and hooked it up in the temperature sensor port and have no pressure at all. The gauge never flutters at any rpm. My 555A manual doesn't mention the solenoid I have on the side of the transmission so I'm not sure what part it plays. Could it cause this?
I was hoping some of you fine folks had some idea of anythng else I could look at before having to call 911. This is a great forum and I appreciate any help.
Thanks, Carl

I wish I could help. Just a couple of thoughts. Are you sure your F-N-R lever is really working? Is it possible a pin or something fell out just as you stopped? I have seen a similar conundrum. I miss the dump valve on my 655A since the wire broke off inside the solenoid. NO LONGER AVAILABLE! You have to buy a whole new valve assembly! I would guess your problem is in one of those two areas-hopefully no major splitting!

Carl,
I have a 655A and the solenoid on the side is the electric dump valve (mine is unhooked)Have you checked the manual dump valve under the brake pedals to see if it is stuck? mine will stick from time to time and I have to spray it with penetrating oil and free it up.HTH

Greg, Thanks for the response. Can you expand on the 'dump valve' and what it does? Since my 555A manual doesn't reference it I have no idea.
Thanks again.

when activated it dumps the oil from the pump back into the sump just like kicking it into neutral. I should have said that the manual dump valve under the brake pedals also activates an electric switch with is what gets full of dirt & etc. you can spray it with penetrating oil below the deck and above the trans. from the battery side. If you go to the New Holland website you can go to the part search and bring up the diagram and parts list.HTH

Thanks for the additional help, Greg. I"ll try to make this the last question ;-).
I have disconnected the switch under the floor board for the pedal and also disconnected the solenoid under the tractor and no improvement. Do you know if when the solenoid fails can it fail in the open position? Is there a way to by-pass this for testing? I"m kind of baffled as to why it was working fine and the next startup it won"t move.
It looks as if there may be a repair bill in my future!
Thanks again.
