Looked at a D8 yesterday. Serial number is 1H6217SP. It has a front mount cable control unit with blade and a Hyster D8N rear winch. Undercarriage is very good. Owner said it ran well but has not run for 2 years. He is going to try to start it. I thinks it is a 38 or 39, anyone know for sure. The winch has two speeds anyone know anything about these. I think the SP in the serial number could be for special gearing, any ideas on what that might be?

I show that serial number as 1940 production.
The Hyster "N" series I'm familiar with are single speed. SP (special parts) is most likely different transmission gear ratios that were offered. Front cable control would most likely be a #24 Cat unit.
Great old iron!!!

Thanks for the information, I will check on the winch again. Do you know what the rated line pull would be for the winch?

Closest I could find was the D8L Hyster winch which would have come on the 1H tractor originally.
58,000 lb pull empty drum
35,600 lb full drum
Both with 1" line.

I would expect the D8N winch to be about the same.
