I have a 450 and it has become real hard to start. I have checked the injectors and replaced three of them. I have had the fuel pump re-built and it will start now if I either it heavy. Once I get it started and it warms up it runs good. It does not have the power that it once had. Do you think the top rings are worn out and need to be replaced, and if so would you go ahead a overhaul the entire engine. What do you think my problem is?
This is a 450 B which is 1978 model.

Is the fuel line flowing fully? I had a problem with mine years ago and I had some gunk that was partially clogging the fuel line...it was hard to start and lacked power...I hope its something simple like that. Good luck.

I agree with Bob/Ont. Check the "entire" intake system before you start throwing more money at it. It might surprise some what all can get in there to plug things up. If oil bath cleaner don't forget to check the stack (along with both top and bottom wire mesh). bob f.

Charles,

Careful with that ether. I broke a top ring on my 188 diesel by trying to keep the engine running with either while there was air in the fuel line.

After the ring broke on the #2 cylinder the engine still started okay and made reasonable power but had lots of blowby coming out the vent. I ended up putting in a kit (sleeves, pistons etc). I was lucky in that the crank had no measurable wear.

If everything is working okay the 188 is a good little engine. Mine starts after sitting for months even in cooler weather (upper 40's) with no ether or glow plug. Biggest problem I have is keeping the fuel filters clean. Bacteria in the fuel is a bit of a problem on lesser used Diesels here in NC.

Best of luck,
John

First thing I'd suspect is the top rings being completely broken - not worn. Very common, espcially if a lot of ether has been used. Pull the head off and you be able to see pretty easy. A diesel with no top rings at all will start awful unless you load it heavy with ether - but once you get it good and hot it can run pretty good - but will lack power and smoke. I've seen many over the years that get hard starting - at times from a minor problem. But, then when ether gets used heavy, the pistons and rings get ruined. Lack of proper fuel delivery can do it too - but since you had the pump fixed, that seems doubtful. It might of your problem to start with, and now things are worse.

Is the injector pump timed correctly to the engine,if the pump timing is out it can cause both bad starting and lack power,if the fuel side is ok take off the oil filler and check for excessive blow back, if that checks ok if the machine has a turbo take off the air intake hose and check to see if the compressor wheel is free with your finger tips (engine stopped) no screwdriver,if thats ok see what comes out the stack when you crank it over, when you stop the engine for the night push the stop control home and put the throttle on full just in case the metering valve is sticking in the stop position, you could try to adavance the timing if there is room in the pump slots.
Good luck

I think you should check the intake for dirt. Sounds to me like you might have a dusted engine.
Later Bob
