I have a JD 410 backhoe. When you push down with the loader arms to lift front of machine up it lifts it fine, but as soon as you let go of the lever the front end goes right back down. Do you have the to have the front end off the ground when using the backhoe? Everything else is fine. What would I look at to solve this problem.

You posted this some time ago, I'm just curious. Did you find the problem? If not, this is my diagnosis. I'll put my money on the regenerative check valve in the bucket valve section for the loader. If I recall correctly, it is the upper relief valve, it has an "A" stamped on the top. It is not a conventional relief valve, it only contains a white nylon ball that is damaged. Replace it with a conventional 2500 psi relief and you will never have the problem again. Or replace just the ball and the proble will reappear. It won't hurt anything or change the operation. I probably changed 100 if I changed one, well at least 50!

Unless you do the cylinder leakage test as I detailed for you ...You will not know if the cylinder packings are leaking..Just because the cylinder isn't blubbering oil out where you can physically see it , doesn't mean the packings aren't leaking internally across the piston inside..The relief valves are in the sections of the valve that control each function..One on the top next to where the control valve actuating shaft sticks out the top of the valve..The other relief valve is on the bottom of the valve section next to the " big acorn nut" looking part..There are also lift checks in there too...Your best help would be to get a Tech manual or parts book to identify these parts..

My skid steer bucket all of a sudden started creeping down real fast. I thought maybe it was the control valve but I checked the most common problem first. The piston seals on the cylinders. Bingo! There was actually little chunks off the seals. Most likely and easiest to fix problem. No external leak at all. Dave

I will check to see if loader leaks down when fully raised and warm. Where would the release valve be located for the loader.

There is no fluid leaking from the packings in the loader cylinders. I will check the control linkage. It seems to be returning to the middle position.

Does the loader "leak down" slightly over a time span of a couple of minutes when you raise it to full height when warm ???..Most likely cylinder packings in the loader lift cylinders..If it doesn't "leak down" when raised to full height , you might have a relief valve defective causing the problem ..To test the cylinder packings , Remove the cylinder hose at the chrome end of the cylinder, cap the hose..Start the machine and just put some hydraulic pressure to the cylinder , not enough to raise the loader but to slightly pressurize the cylinder..If you see a steady stream of hydraulic oil come from the open fitting on the cylinder without the loader physically moving , the cylinder packing is defective..

loader cylinders must be bad or something is bent in the control linkage.
