JD450C revs up and down when working and then quits

While using my JD450C crawler this weekend I noticed that the engine started revving up and down as I drove. It wouldn’t shut off so I closed off the air intake to shut it down. I checked the fuel and it was low but I thought it had enough to keep running. The next day I added fuel and it started up okay. It soon started to rev up and down again and after about 30 minutes it shut off. I checked the fuel line at the injector pump and it seemed to have air bubbling out when I loosened it and cranked the engine. After I noticed it sounded like it might start I retightened the fuel line. It then restarted and ran for about another 30 minutes and then shut down. During this time it would rev up and down slightly but not as bad as before. I again loosened the fuel line, thought I saw bubbles, retightened it and it started again. I used it for about another 20 minutes and it shut down and that’s where it is now. I’m wondering if maybe the fuel pump has gone bad or perhaps I’m sucking in air at the fuel filter of somewhere else. I don’t see any leaks. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks,
RussT

I thought I had air getting into the fuel line because of the bubbles in the filter. The other day I noticed the ground wet under the tractor. It was from diesel fuel leaking from the fuel line. I removed the line and found a hole in it apparently caused by it rubbing against something. I replaced the line and it runs better than it has in a very long time. I don't know if it was sucking air through the hole or starving it for fuel but the new line fixed the problem.
Thanks,
RussT

Any fuel supply problem to the pump, and/or a failed plastic governor-ring inside the pump will do the same thing.

Sounds like you got stuff in your fuel tank thats clogging up the line. When you shut it off it relieves the vaccume then it will start then the problem starts again when it gets sucked into the fuel line again.I had the same problem with my 450-C. Changed the filter at the tank outlet. Kept doing it, finally removed the tank and power washed the inside. Works good now.
