H-3 Problem with the Starter

Problem I have is on my H-3 I was trying to get it started and it back-fired which I think caused the start cone to break off. Pulled the tank off and pulled the starter out and the broken end. Went to a Starter Alternator shop and got a new one no problem. Yet…. The guy asks where the gear was; now I have a Problem. So my question to you folks is short of pulling the motor out or at least moving it forward. How is the best way to get the gear out? Being you have to reach in a five inch hole about six inches before you go down. I did crawl under it and pulled the little inspection cover off and that really didn’t do anything to help me. Do you guys have any ideas? Thanks for any and all help on this.
Don

There is about a 3" plug in the bottom of the bell housing. Mine had 2 bolts going into it. I could hammer out the plug, my motor is out, that should give you access with a magnet to drag out the drive. Good luck!

The gear I'm assuming you mean the starter drive. It is a fairly heavy, large drive. You would need a heavier magnet than a regular pick-up tool. My H3 motor is pulled right now. I'll look tonight, but I thought there was an inspection cover. Will let you know friday morning.

Have absolutely no idea of bends/angles you need to get around, but have had some luck fishing pieces out with magnet firmly -FIRMLY- attached to end of something stiff enough to push but flexible enough to go around corners (rubber hose, insulated elec house wire, whatever). Don"t leave any shoulders on your rig (if you try it) that"d hang up backing out. My apologies if impossible in your case. Good luck.
