I have a Case 450 and would like to get a glow plug for it. It has only 1 plug, I guess I could go to Case for it but maybe someone out there can tell me where I can get one without paying Case prices for it..... .thanks..Phil

Very common and they cost around $20 new. I haven't checked, but they probably sell them on this website. That intake-heater element you are calling a glow-plug is a very common item and can be bought many places for around $40 -$50. Case, Allis Chalmers, IH,Ford, Massey Ferguson, Perkins, etc. all used them in certain diesels and many foreign tractors still use them. Lucas calls their version "Thermostart."

There are two basic types.

One is dry and is just an electric heating coil usually mounted in the air-intake.

The other is wet and is hooked to a small diesel-fuel reservoir. So, when you energize it, it not only gets hot, but also lights up some diesel fuel and spits it into the intake manifold.

Ford # for the $20 heater is: C5NE9A436A

Delphi #s include 1854050, 1854060, 1854080, 1854090, 1854101, 1854102,1854104, 1854106, 1854112, etc.

Phil,

Don't think this glow plug is available anymore from Case. At least when I checked on it a few years ago it was not. I would not mind getting a plug for my 450 but I've found the little 188 Diesel pretty easy to start even in cool weather. Have not tried to crank it much below 40 degrees though.

In case you can't find the plug and you are forced to use ether on a cold start, be VERY careful how much ether you use. I ended up cracking the top ring of my #2 cylinder, most likely from using ether to try and keep the engine running when the problem was air in the fuel line.

Best of luck,
John

Thanks, It cranks over pretty well, if I use either, I wait till I see some white smoke and just spray under the air cleaner so it just gets a smell of the either. I've heard of some people using wd40 instead of either, to keep from breaking parts. After it has run it starts right up, but if not used in several weeks or so it's maybe yes maybe either. They are good machines, and a crawler can do a whole bunch with a lot less H.P. vs. big power and tires.
