Anyone had the pleasure of working on one of these injector pumps. Customer brought a 850B in engine in a rubbermaid container. what kind of mess will this be to time the pump back or will it have to go to a shop to be timed.

I"m surprised there is no mark on the gears and I can"t remember if there was or not,the engine I think was 336BD or BDT,the crank pulley had a notch that lined up with a pointer at about 10 to on clock face, you would do as Chess said get #1 cylinder on compression stroke and line up the pulley with the pointer, line up the pump marks and mount it,the timing is done to match #1 cylinder and that insures that it will be correct for the rest,if #1 is out so will the others, you need the manual for reference for such details like the degrees etc,the marks might be just a punch mark so clean the gears and you may have to turn the engine several times to bring the idler gear to the right place,if someone has the manual they might check and send you the page.

Aj Ijust looked at IT manual an as far as i can tell small gear on front of injection pump will have scribe mark on it (FLAT flange back of teeth) an all he has to do is make sure they are in line with each other other one will be on injection pump flange They are sometimes hard to see.(no1 cylinder at firing position) There are no marks on that gear on front.Just remove cap to see scribe marks. However if plate in front of camshaft cover is removed those gears do have to be aligned with camshaft gear. there are 2 punch marks on front of gear that must be meshed with cams shaft marks. Again first thing is to be sure no 1 cylinder i sat firing position. Iam sure gear on injection pump will only go on correct way.

As far as I remember to remove the pump there was a plate directly in front of it that was removed, then remove the three bolts that held the drive gear to the hub on the pump shaft, then after the pump mounting bolts were removed the pump was free,so if the gear is still in place the pump hub will only bolt up when in the right position as the holes are offset,if the gear is out it will have to be put back in the proper place so the match marks on the idler gear line up with the mark on the pump gear.

There in lies the problem. no timing marks on gears. timing marks are on pump housing and pump hub. If I line up the two marks is there any way the pump can be out of time. It is a four cylinder and a PES inline plunger style pump. I guess what I'm trying to say is does the pump inject all 4 cylinders with one full rotation of the pump gear or one ratation of the pump gear for each cylinder. trying to make this less confusing as possible. by the way Never take on an overhaul that comes in a rubbermaid container and cardboard box.

Do as AJ said . Than you or customer will have to remove valve cover an determine when no 1 cyl is at top dead center ready to fire than turn back couple degrees to 33degrees btdc (not sure of correct no for that engine) than mount pump with both lines matching. You will have to remove large cap nut to see. Note pump should never be removed with out first having no1 cylinder at firing position an two lines matching
