We have a Mitsubushi MC300LC Excavator, and we cannot keep a starter working. Our starter shop cannot figure out why we burn up so many starters. We might get a few months before we get the Click followed by silence. Any suggestions?

17 ft of 3/0 wire from batteries to the starter. No drag on engine. Does not require many cranks to start. The solenoid is fine, but the starter motor burns up. We will try to move the batteries closer to the engine to reduce the voltage drop. Any other suggestions?

I installed a slave solenoid and we still have the same problem. Our ground strap attaches under one of the three starter bolts and goes to the frame. I would like to relocate the batteries (New) closer to the starter. I need to check if there some kind of compression release on the engine and/or a hydraulic bind on the pumps. I will trace the battery wire to ensure its not grounding out somewhere.

"...why we "burn up" so many starters..."
Actually overheated to failure? coils fried, armature scorched, brushes melted, etc?
If so, PD's advice good; also clean (down to bare metal) where starter mounts on engine, even wire brush bolts clean, for good contact.
Do fresh starters turn engine easily? any hint of excessive drag on engine? does engine require many turns to start? (long cranking can overheat starter, as well as extra engine/clutch? drag).
If no help, try Mitsubishi forum on tractorbynet to see if Mitsubishi problem. Good luck.

Be sure you have good batteries and good connections. Weak batteries cause excess draw and create heat within the starter. The click you get sounds like a solenoid going bad. Try installing a slave solenoid. This will reduce the amount of current through the primary and may prevent arcing which is the cause of failure usually.
