td-15B with reverse problem

I borrowed a friends td-15b to clear some land, and it started cruching and popping in reverse. It sounds fine moving forward. Steering clutches make no differnce in the sound. The dozer is a manual shuttle shift. This problem happened all at once after no great load on the machine. I am a diesel mechanic, but have no dozer final drive/transmission experience. I am also on a non-existent budget, so any help would be greatly appreciated.

Doug: Sounds like maybe a final drive problem. Probably a pinion bearing. When traveling forward the pinion gear has a tendency to pull itself into the bull gear but when backing up it tends to push itself away allowing it to jump teeth. Check the sprockets with a bar for looseness too. This will give you an idea if the sprocket carrier bearings are bad. They are also noted for planetary failure, but I believe you would get the awful sounds in both directions in that case. If you have any other questions feel free to email me directly at sales@pdmechanical.com. Good Luck. Steve
