i have a 1977 d6c it turns fine with the peddals but doesent turn with the levers , whats up with that? also how do you adjust the brakes ?

thanks for the help guys .i taked to a guy at the cat dealer he said he thought some of them had a catch that would release the clutch if you got on the brakes hard and didnt pull the clutch . but he couldnt remember for shure . im gona go look at again tomorrow. and take a friend with me that has one like it . thanks again for the help

Wayne, is it a powershift or direct drive trans? Later model tractors with boosted brakes had total lever steer but many of them where converted back to the old style. I suspect someone has cobbled up something on this one.

The levers release the clutches and the peddals apply the brakes. It is normal to need the brakes to steer if you are not pushing or pulling a load. Take off two the triangle covers under the fuel tank. There is a 9/16"hex adjuster under them. Tighten right up and back off 9 clicks or 1 1/2 turns.

thanks bob. when i step on the brakes it turns but when i pull the levers nothing happens , theres no resistance on the levers . should the clutches release and let it turn when you pull the levers ? and can you adjust them ? i havent bought this thing yet and have never driven a dozer before . thanks for the information.

Wayne, I have never seen a D6C work like that but I learn something new every day.
Sounds to me someone has disconnected the levers and connected linkage rods to brake rods. If you look under floor plates you should see two small rods 1/2" dia that connect lever bellcranks to steering valve. There should also be two larger 3/4" dia rods to the brakes. These rods should work independently of each other. Take a look and you will figure out what is going on. Adjust brakes as I said and try it again. Let me know how it steers. Does it want to stop when turning or steer freely?

Wayne: When steering you always pull back on the lever before pushing brake pedals. If steering under load, sometimes there is no need to use the brakes as resistance will do the braking for you. Now, if you are pushing the brakes without pulling back on the levers, and the machine still steers, then the steering clutches are slipping. Applying the brake without pulling the levers should just put a load on the tractor but not stop or slow the track movement. Steve.

ok i got a lesson on how to drive the thing and we think its ok , can you tell me how mutch trans oil it holds , does it have a filter , and where do you drain it , thanks for the help

Wayne, I assume it's a powershift trans.
There is a drain plug under the bevelgear case(rear center of machine) that will drain trans bevelgear and steering clutches, should get about 15 to 20 Gal coming out so need a big container. A 45 gal barrel cut off to slide under is good. Also there should be a small plate to take off of the skidpan to drain the torque converter housing. The torque housing plug is on a casting with 5 bolts, take it off and clean screen inside. You need a new gasket for there plus some seals for the trans filter cover and the magnetic screen cover. The trans filter is up beside the engine, LH side and the mag screen is in the pump suction line, has a 4" square cover. Use TDTO4 oil to refill. Also cut open old filter and check for metal aswell as what is stuck to magnets in screen. Before you change oil make sure it steers easily on a hard surface at low throttle setting with warm trans oil.
