After years of using picks/shovels, ag. tractors with loaders, a backhoe on the 3pt, etc I have decided to sell some things and replace the lot with a good backhoe. I"ve used both Case machines and Deere, and been around Cat"s but never been around a JCB in action. I"ve pretty much decided that I want 4x4, extenda-hoe, preferable a 4 in 1 bucket, and hydraulic setup on the boom for a hammer(Just in case)..... I don"t need a cab as ROPs would be ok, but I"ll probably end up with one just because their are more cab machines out there. I always prefered the Case lever/pedal controls to slap sticks as well. I"ve been looking hard at 580 Super E"s and K"s, and 310 Deeres, but should I be looking harder at Cat"s and JCB"s? I was around a 416 Cat and wasn"t impressed, but it wasn"t too well taken care of either. What is everyones opinions on what brand and why? I"ll be using the machine with the bucket alot(Basically it will replace one of my ag. tractors with a loader) for lifting, dirt moving and for moving snow. And we have numerous digging projects here to do, but nothing to large.

Case 580SK 4X4,extendahoe,4in1 bucket and piped for breaker, why, a machine that is moderen but still simple,no silly electronics, good easy to start engine, good powertrain, decent oil immersed brakes, powerful digger, simple to service and repair, very much favoured by owner drivers, buy with a fully enclosed cab, apart from keeping the weather off yourself it keeps it off all the controls and switches as well,a nice bit of heat when you are ploughing snow won't go a miss, good luck with what ever you decide on.

The first thing I'd check is service and parts availability. Who seems to be the most represented in your area. Personally, I'd stay away from JCB and Cat. To pricey on parts! I'd look long and hard to: John Deere, Case and Ford/New holland..... .Just my $.02 cents worth. Jim in N M

I remember in the late 80"s early 90's, all you saw was Case 580's. There had to be a reason. There also has to be some of them around in good shape.

I have a JD310D for farm use. It's equipped similarly to your goals -- 4-in-1 bucket, 4x4. But no extenda-hoe or third function on the boom.

I paid a premium price to get the 4-in-1 bucket; it was an after market accessory and not OEM. But the bucket has been hugely useful for picking up things without leaving the seat. It also comes in handy for clamshelling loose soil and rock; sometimes there isn't enough traction or the pile is too small to just push the load into the bucket. It also makes a good surrogate for a box blade for finish grading. "Dozer mode" is the least useful -- not enough "push" in a wheeled machine.

I don't have an extend-a-hoe and don't miss it. I'm a little less efficient because I have to re-position rather than extend the hoe. But it's for farm use and I don't need maximum productivity. But I would badly miss the 4-in-1.

Parts for the 310D are readily available and can be obtained through the local JD ag dealer -- I don't have to deal with the "yellow machine" construction equipment boys. But I haven't needed many parts in the 350 hours I've put on the rig so far.
