Hi All, I have a straight jd450 loader w/ backhoe attach.Approx. 1966 While backing up a hill, I heard slight grinding noise under the seat, to the right. Now the right track has has no power at all, foward or reverse. Left track drives fine. I looked inside the steering clutch housing while running machine, when I pull left lever everything stops, no movement in right side. There is some bearing noise, but no grinding. Right final drive has a bad bearing, could this have caused problems? Where do I go from here, I have a huge list of work I need this machine for. Thanks very much! Brian

There are 2 shafts that power the steering clutches..The outer shaft is the upper shaft in the top of the final drive..The inner shaft runs from the diff ring gear housing..I've seen the inner shafts break..I've also seen the inner spline in the steering clutch hub strip out..You've got a problem for sure with the final drive , my suggestion is to pull the final and rebuild it.. You can see the ring gear from the top if you remove the cast top cover [ about 1 foot square]under the fuel tank..From there you can physically see the ring gear and bearing quills and pinion gear..

Thanks for the quick reply. If the inner shaft is stripped, can this be changed out thru the steering clutch housing. What would parts cost be? thanks

It can be changed thru the upper final drive shaft hole..Need to remove track, sprocket ..There is a plug drilled on an angle dead center above the top of final drive housing..Inside there is a set screw with a jamb nut on it..Put a couple of sprocket bolts into the lower final shaft so you can turn the shaft to get the set screw up on top thru the angle drilled hole..underneath the machine there will be 2 drain plugs for the steering clutch housings..The one directly under the steering clutch drum, I use a bottle jack and a bolt to support the drum while you take out the set screw..Also where you removed the setscrew from the steering clutch drum , I usually install a 3/8" bolt with flat washers to support the drum from there..Careful not to go too far with the bolt so it doesn't engage the groove in the upper final drive shaft.. Remove the upper shaft bearing quill [3 1/3" bolts/studs]..I use a slide hammer with a 7/16" bolt welded to an adapter to remove the outer shaft..After that's out the inner shaft can be removed the same way..You can e-mail me on installation...There's some tricks...Roy
