Seal install

I have a Case 480D backhoe. I need to replace the seal Part # A-179053. This seal is behind the defferential lock mechanism and seals the two shafts. It is inside the outer shaft and it seals the smaller shaft. Can this seal be replaced without breaking the shafts apart? I know it will be a confined installation but I am a machinist and can make the tools required to install. What I am asking is, is the seal installed from the defferential side of the shaft or the outer side? If I knew the OD of this seal, I would know.

You can"t remove the inner shaft because it will not come through the bushing in the outer one,the outer one will not come off the inner because the planet gear on the end will not get past the bull gear on the halfshaft,if you can"t get the old seal out that will be the only option, the bull gear has to be taken off the halfshaft as it is been removed, with the bull gear out of the way the hollow shaft will slide off the inner shaft, that"s why I said try and get the old seal out somehow.
Good Luck

The crossshaft seal goes in from the outside into the hollow shaft, take things off out of your way and make a sharp tool to pierce the old oil seal and prise it out, make sure the old seal spring come with it,tap the new one in with a piece of pipe, its too big of a job to go by the book and have the diff on the bench to do it.

Thanks AJ, I was hoping you would come through again. Just to be sure I understand---the seal clearance between the two shafts is small, about 1/8" I removed the larger seal(in the housing) with sheetmetal screws. This method will probably work with the smaller seal that we are discussing. I just want to be sure that the seal can be replaced from the outer end of the shaft, without removing the inner shaft. Thanks again for your help!
