You can pick up a Case 580 Super Es in the 12k range. That will be a 2wd machine with 5k average on hrs. These old machines are tough and no more expensive to work on than anything else. Packing the cyls. are resonable for the parts. Transmission ,rear end and torque converter generally never give trouble if they have oil. Most of the time these machines need pins and bushings, tires and the hy cyls packed along with hoses. They have good dealer support and easy to work on for the most part will hold their value if kept in decent shape This is just my 2 cents but Case is all I have ever owned and make a living with. Not sure where you are, but stick to a common name .. see what others have in the area and see where the prices are.. Parts from local dealers is a plus. If you find something that you are ineterested in, get the basic info on it and even a serial number and post back on here on a specific model. You'll have answers in no time as there are alot of knowledgeable people with experience with alot of different brands and models. Also. 10K will get you an older machine that I'm assuming you arent going to work 40 hrs per week.. What is your application?

No its not going to be a 40hr work horse. I have 40 acres of rough terrain I have to tame.

Ive been looking at a 580b..

When you say rough, how steep? You surely know that you're only buying a 2x for that money.

I had a client in your situation. Here, my recommendation was Case. He bought a pretty well worn 580 CK 'cause it fit his initial budget, considerably smaller than yours. After watching me slide it around his mountain for a few days he decided he hadn't spent enough.

The next one was a 580 D extend-a-hoe, still 2x but well over your budget. Much better balanced tractor but I've done a lot of repairs. Normal backhoe stuff, most of the hoses, power steering, brakes, a few cylinder rebuilds.

He's had the time of his life after I taught him how to run it. His neighbors begged me not to give him a key, thought he'd hurt himself. But his place is mostly too steep for him to go there. I didn't teach him how to slide the tractor with the hydraulics. Easily $20k spent so far, and he's delighted.

Well. for what it's worth,If you have 10 K to invest in a hoe I'd save up a little more and get your self a decent one. What you'll get for 10 K is a good bit of work, cause a 10 K hoe is mostly used up BTDT. I'd start out by seeing who has the best service/parts in your area and brands also. Today backhoe's are not cheap to repair, even if you can do a lot of it your self .Hope this helps you. Jim in N M
