Yes, you are right, when I got my machine one brake was not working, and most of the time I never use my brakes. But, there are some REALY BAD things that can happen to you if they don"t work. If you kill the engine when on a hill or near the edge of a bank,!!!! LOOK OUT !!!! when the engine quits the machine will free wheel just like it was out of gear. You can really get into so trouble FAST!!!! I have nearly bought the farm several times, and I use my machine a lot. I think this is a very unforgiving piece of machinery, and very dangerous if you don"t get the brakes fixed or at least able to stop when you need to. It only takes once and it could be the last time to find out the hard way...do your self a BIG FAVOR fix those brakes!!!!

Do a search on this forum for CASE 450 brakes and you will get all the info you can stand. I have a 1973 450. One brake worked when I got it and I replaced the master cyl. to make the other work, but honestly I never use them. I wouldn"t use them for steering anyway. I sometimes use them for unloading, but have learned how to do this without using them also. They are great machines I love mine.

The brakes are not used a lot on these machines. When you let off the throttle the machine pretty much stops by itself. On a hill most people simply lower the blade to stop the machine.

I rebuilt the brakes on my 450 Track Loader a few years ago. No mystery behind it, but the brake chambers are a pain to remove and install. You could probably find the necessary hydraulic parts for the master cylinders at a NAPA dealer, certainly a Case dealer can get them. There are slave cylinders, one for each brake housing. There are also slave cylinders internal to the transmission that will disengage the drive for whatever side you brake on.

There are no track-brakes. The brakes act on the final drive.
