I don't know of any major 450 tranny problems. There is a problem with the 550's uptill the model G.The local dealer told me to stay away from those. He said the 450C was a good investment. After market parts are cheap.I looked at in all the trader sites,Ebay ,Craigs list and local yards have not seen one with with bad tranny.Have seen at least 6 D3's with bad tranny's, plus seen 4 other D3's in yards machines with missing tranneys.I heard they may of fixed it with the C model.Seen a couple JD550's with tranny problem also.If the owner never changed or checked fluid's any tranny might go bad.But the older D3's really stood out. Some one here expalined how to tell the difference between the Cats trans type but can not seem to find it.

I guess that.I ment whats the difference between them. JD 450C has wet clutches and turbo engines compared to a B.I know the Case does not have steering cltches, but what improvement was made.More HP?

Check out machinery trader. Apparently JD 450's have major trans. issues. Later model Cat D3's had optional wet brakes but the older dry brakes work very well when adjusted right. Some people prefer dry brakes. I have a dry brake 931B Cat. It has a 3 forward, 1 reverse transmission. A 3 F, 3 R trans. is also used. They both work very well. There is no need for high speed reverse. Cat does have very good parts availability and manuals. A lot of people prefer Case over JD. Dave

if you buy a case dozer make sure you get the new style 6 way blade-the c-frame is inside the track frames-the old style parts are not available any where(c-frame on outside track frame)already learned the hard way on that. thomas

Have a 450 c, starts fine. Just realized that it would not move. Found no transmission fluid. Looked under the trans. Found a little hole next to the trans drain plug. Fluid was leaking through the little hole. Why?
