Looked at a JD 350 dozer today that will sell at auction Sat. The chains are about 3/8" thick where they contact the rollers. What should I expect to pay for sprockets and chain from Berco? Cross member bolts to track frame are loose. Trying to decide if to bid or how much to bid. Suggestions?

Dave, when those cross member bolts to track frame get loose they wobble around and enlarge the holes in the cross member so even when tightened they will move around. That was the case on the machine I have. The way I fixed them was easy. First I put new bolts in with oversized washers to account for the enlarged holes. I formed a piece of 3/8 or 1/2 inch rod about 3 inches long to fit right along the seam where the cross member contacts the top of the roller frame. Make sure it goes around the curve a bit. Then weld everything together. You weld the top edge of the rod to the cross member and the lower edge to the roller frame. Doesn't have to be really good welds. Now it's all solidly welded together and held tight with bolts. The joint can't slip around even if the welds crack since the two parts are held together by the bolts and the welded rods trap the two parts and won't allow it to slip. In the unlikely event that you ever have to dissassemble this again you cut or grind thru the rod in between the welds and it should come apart without too much trouble.

It's also common for the solid round bar going to the track frames in front of the sprockets to get sloppy. The bar is usually OK but the blocks it goes into get bigger. I bought some tubing that fit fairly close over the shaft and then found a pipe that the tubing fit into. I welded the tubing inside the pipe and then made it fit in between the blocks so it was the full width inside the 2 blocks. I figured this should take out any play and last longer because there's more surface area. Reversers can leak into the diff. as well. They are a nice machine when they work properly though. Dave

Berco is expensive. Find a dealer that sells Trek. Google Trek undercarrige or DCF undercarrige. They have 10 distributor locations in N. America and lots of dealers. It is good undercarrige. OEM on Volvo equipment. Should be quite a bit cheaper than Berco. I did a 355 JD (350 loader version). Biggest pain is that the rails don't have a split master link. Would be best to find someone who has a portable track press. Very hard to pound the master pins in. If the rails are shot, the rollers most likely are too and possibly the idlers. Check the rest of the machine out carefully as well. Complete undercarriage (rails, sprockets, idlers, rollers, top carrier. roller bolts, shims on track frame etc.) should be under $7000 in the US, less pads. Possibly around the $6000 mark as I think some prices have come down. I've also heard there are some Chinese undercarriage that isn't so good. Trek is Korean but very high quality. 3 year or 4000 hr. pro-rated warrantee. Same as Berco I think. Dave
