On the rear mounted R models, it's on the top side of the unit, facing the sky, on top of the gear oil filled housing or steel frame. Older ones were on the back of the unit, behind the drum as I see in the photos, they must have changed that, looks easier to damage the tag in that spot. I'm most familiar with the R7 models. I took a quick look into a D8 8R military tech manual, they only show rear mounted R8 PCU's, probably per the gov't purchase order, but in another military tech manual, I found a listing and some information on front mounted LeT PCU's for D7's in the LeT section, they show an FTD7 front mount unit, state it is unique in it's mounting compared to other front mount LeT PCU's, it's an underslung unit mounted up underneath the tractor compared to the other front of tractor mounted N series. From the models listed in the N series, these may be applicable to the one you have on the D8 1H, although at the time of this LeT publication October 1942, there were a number of models no longer current. AN8, AD8, AF8, DN8 should be front mount LeT PCU model numbers. According to the manual, the N series could be fitted on the front or back of a tractor, but was not interchangeable between tractors, ( I assume they mean different models, they don't clarify that ) but the working mechanism inside is the same.
Also, most of these, ( not sure what earlier ones had ) use the screw type clutch to engage, many of these use identical parts and the innards are mostly the same. Every so often, I'll see a manual on ebay for LeT PCU's, but not often, these old military tech manuals include a LeT tech manual, but are mostly specific to what the government ordered for those tractors, no parts diagrams listed, but I'd bet they are very similar if not identical in principle of operation, look simple to work on, the eccentric or concentric shaped driven and driving cones with friction material and bearing adjustments look like the most significant maintenance issue, that and replacing those linings on the cones. After looking closely at the photos of the FTD7 and the model N front mount PCU's, I don't see any data plates visible, you can see them on the R and T models on the back, yet on both my R7's they are on the top.
