I'm looking to buy a used backhoe in the 15k range, would go a little higher if I found one I really liked. Planning to buy as somewhat of a toy, (will be debt free soon), but will be willing to work it for the right jobs. Has to be 4wd is my only must.
I like the JD 410c/510c
Local dealer has a Case 580K 4x4 for 16,900
Hows parts availibility for the Fords? I like the 555/655's
Cats always seem to be fairly expensive.

What would you guys reccomend for a good 'hoe?
Parts availibility is a big concern, I'll have this for a long time.

Do any of them have problems with "road mileage"?
I might either have to drive the one home I buy or drive it locally to bury a dead horse etc.
Any input is greatly appreciated. Thanks. -Mike

Can"t go wrong with one of the Case 580"s. You see them everywhere here in Pennsylvania. Built tough and last for years.

Because of the dead horse...don't be in a 'hurry' to get one to bury a horse. :?
If at all possable, run the hoe for a couple of hours before you buy. As the hyd's warm up the behavior changes a bit. make sure it has the breakout power you need.

4 wheel drive, a great plus!! Do you plan on operating on hillsides? if so, be sure that the brakes are up to standard! (parking brake). Often an operator learns to use the brakes as little as possable, (one less ting to do) esp if the unit is getting older and the brakes are getting worn. And then when the parking brake is needed...it's not up to standard...sl

I moved from an older IH to a Ford 655A. It is a fine machine, with parts readily available - if you can afford them! I often wonder how this compares to other brands. Just seems like parts for this are expensive compared to my other machinery.

I have a old case 480B and parts prices dont seem that bad , do`se seem the price is alittle higher when it`s tagged industrial even when it`s the same as the Ag part but overall case is`nt bad and I hav`nt had any problem getting any part I need and it was born back in 1968 .

Thanks for the replies guys, the main idea of rushing out to buy one is to pay it off quickly, That way, I can buy my land and build my house. I already have a few old tractors, 2 crawlers, a 1 ton GMC dumpbox and a old JD skidloader. I want to own just about everything I need to clear the land and build house/barns.
