Hello All! Thanks in advance for reading this and helping me out. I've got a 580D backhoe with the Borg-Warner shuttle. It slips some when going forward, but I can still move the machine around, and it will even pull itself up small hills. Reverse seems fine. This weekend I did all the pressure tests as outlined in the service manual. I changed the fluid about a month ago and cleaned the suction screen, o-ring was fine. I did the pressure tests on the cooling circuit first (port on the side of the shuttle). With the transaxle in neutral, engine at full throttle, the pressure was 40 psi in neutral, forward, and reverse. Next I tested the clutch circuits (port on top). I had 0 psi in neutral and forward, at both idle and full throttle. In reverse, I had 120 at idle and 135 at full throttle. The manual does not specifically identify a problem with these readings. Any ideas? I would think because the reverse readings are good that my torque converter and charge pump are good. Any input would be much appreciated. Daryl

Only two test ports on the Borg Warner, one for the cooler and one for the clutches, the test port for the clutches is located before the control valve,so the one port catches both, the machine driving strong in reverse says that the torque, charge pump and reverse clutch is ok,with no pressure in neutral it suggests a problem with the control valve, remove the clutch cut out solenoid and check that the F/R valve is moving all the way back and forth, check the pressure without the solenoid on,if no joy remove the control valve, the fluid is escaping somewhere,if the seal on the forward clutch had failed you would still get a reading in neutral, maybe an o'ring on the valve.

Daryl: I am not real familiar with the transmission you are working with. I have done a few in earlier machines but nothing that late model. Anyway, It seems that in order to test the forward and reverse clutch circuits you will have to use 2 separate ports, one for forward and one for reverse. Forward and reverse can't be the same circuit. Unless this is a common psi test port. In which case you can't pinpoint the problem. Usually there will be a fwd port and a rev port. If there is a noticeable loss of psi in either then the problem is likely to be located either in the coresponding clutch assy. or in the shaft sealing rings for that particular clutch circuit. The 0 psi in neutral seems correct but you should have psi in fwd. However if the 0 psi reading is correct the likleyhood of the tractor moving at all in fwd is very slim. I may have some books on the Borg Warner trans. I'll take a look and try to familiarize myself. If you have any other questions feel free to contact me directly. I can also provide you with parts or a re-conditioned unit. Steve.
