My old massey 470 wheel loader wouldnt start for me last week. It would turn over but wouldnt start. No smoke at the chimney or nothin'. So I turned the key on and i couldnt hear the electrical fuel pump firing. I removed it and tested it in the garage and it works fine. I re-installed the fuel pump and had a look at the wiring. WHAT A MESS! The wire from the fuel pump to the cab changed colour four times! I had remembered my dad was the last one to use the loader last fall. He was fiddling with the wires for some reason and had to take off the loom. He was done with his fiddling and failed to re-install the wire loom cover thing. The exposed connection hit the frame and shorted out about half the wiring. So rather then replace the burnt wires with one run of wire he grabbed short pieces from the tool box and wrapped a bit of electrical tape around each of the many connections and now i have no idea which connection is giving me the problem. When the weather clears i'm going to take all the wiring out that he messed with and replace it all proper with full single wire runs, heat shrink the joints and connections and cover all the wires in loom.
I'm scared that with fuel and oil and other junk that accumalates on the engine and wires will cause a fire if left exposed.
Just a rant. If you have to fix something do it right the first time, and do it once.
Needless to say, the old man is upset that he has to buy rolls of new wire and lunch for my labour! lol!!

An idiot driver at the lumber yard where I worked many years ago, did something similar to a truss trailer, sometimes they just don't realize, these kind of repairs need to be done neatly, organized and with the right materials, method and materials, or you'll end up like I did losing all my lights at night while coming back from a delivery, had to tape the courtesy high beam switch to the on position and blind everyone else for the rest of the trip just to get home. Recently bought used R model mack, they sprayed chassis paint all over the main electrical terminal block in the engine compartment fire wall, so the 3/8" nut on the studs were a b$tch to get off, I had to not only rewire the tractor from the terminal block, but also the trailer, good thing they had an account at napa, just a driver, but in this place, if you did not do it yourself, it would not get done. Even found the gum wrapper foil in the fuse box, people just don't get it.

I have dealt with situations similar to this and I feel your aggrivation. I just try to realize that the person did the best he could considerating the circumstances. He may have been aggrivated and in a hurry, and intended to make the proper repair later. Electrical problems often take more time then rebuilding an engine, and most often require little cost to fix. If a job is worth doing--Do It Right, and take pride in your work!
