I have a case uni-loader with a 188d engine in it,runs fine then the engine surges up and down then shuts off, it will start back up and run. i don"t have much experience with diesels, changed all the filters but have a feeling it might be the pump any suggestions would be appreciated.

It's a common problem with the Stanadyne/Roosamaster rotary injection pump. Plastic inside the pump falls apart in all of them when it gets to a certain age (governor weight retainer dampener ring). Search the archives here - it's been dicussed in detail many times. Same basic pumps with the same problems also used on Deere, IH, Ford, AC, Oliver, and also on Chevy and Ford pickups up to 1985.

The pump can usually be fixed with one hour's work on the bench and $50 in parts when someone knows what they are doing. Otherwise- you'll wind up paying a pump-shop $400 - and maybe a lot more.
