941 or d4 Weld final drive housing?

My Cat 941 (same frame as d4) has a crack above the semi-circle that the final drive runs in, on the inside of the undercarriage toward the front of the semi-circle. The crack is just above where the semi-circle bolts on. So, it drips oil. I've found a good welder that says he'll weld it up once I drain the oil. Given where the crack is do you think they can weld it without harming the seals? I'm thinking that there probably is not any seals in that spot, aside from probably a gasket where the final drive housing bolts on. Even then a good welder, that's done these kinds of things before probably has tricks to not hurt the internals wouldn't he? thanks!

I have welded several of these housing on 941 and 951s in the past 40 years.
You need to know why it cracked. All of the ones I have had to weld were caused by the final drive pinion bearing failing and breaking the cage it is in and then cracking the main housing.

Any advice for doing the weld? or just drain the oil and weld in short bursts?

I drill a hole at the end of the crack grind a deep "V" the full length. Itwill take several pases, letitcool between passes.use either a 7018 or if you can find them a MG600 rod,The MG rod will weld much cooler.

Thank you Bob. What would be the tell tale signs that the bearing has given out? Machine seems to run quiet and don't hear any abnormal sounds but maybe once or twice in 20 or so hours. The crack appears to be fairly old, and the final drives were supposedly overhauled about 500 hours ago...but there is a lot I don't know about these machines yet..

Had a problem similar to this on a IH 500, the bearings failed and the rollers fell to bottom of the housing where the bull gear picked it up and brought it around to jam between the pinion and bull.
That brought the machine to a stop.
Nothing broken but quite a scare as to what could have broke. Maybe that's why it was overhauled and they just never bothered to fix the crack?
How long is it, maybe you can just sew it up as we used to call it? Just a series of overlapping holes with tapered plugs screwed in. You can get them from Irontite.

I'm hoping you're right spivey! that it was just a remnant of a past issue, but I guess I'll find out soon. Thanks for the info!
