Cylinder Packing Kit

Hello again,

While working on the jerky boom issue, a few posts ago, I noticed that the Model 33 loader lift cylinder on the right side, is leaking hydraulic oil out of the gland around the rod. My serial number is before 4178576, so I think that I have narrowed the cylinder down to a group 1, style 1 or style 2 gland. Either way, I am pretty sure that the correct piston packing kit is a D28374. I live near Akron, Ohio, and am wondering if anybody is familiar with a place that will sell the kit. If there is no place nearby, then are there any suggestions for who is a good e-mail supplier? I found lots on Google, but am looking for some good feedback on someplace.

Thank you,
Greg

The control section for the boom cylinder has a load check valve as well as an orifice restriction that could fit NCWayne's description.

When you go shopping for parts you will probably be asked to disassemble the cylinder and view to get the right parts as several styles were used and interchanged over the life of these machines.

The only ones that I know that are familiar and will take the time to address these old machines is
Link
and I believe you were given that contact before.

Just read your reply to AJ on your last post about it sounding like the machine loaded up when using the boom controls. If the spool in the control valve is moving freely there is really nothing there that would cause any type of erratic/jerky movement. My question then is does the boom circuit have any type of lock valve in it? If it does the spool in that valve may be sticking and causing erratic/jerky operation like your talking about. I ran into this problem on an excavator several years back. When the spool in the lock valve sticks it causes the system to have to build a higher pressure to overcome the sticking spool then is needed to move the boom itself. When the spool finally lets go the boom will then jump because of the "extra" oil, under pressure, rushuing into the cylinder. If there is some type of lock valve gone haywire then putting a restriction inline like was origionally talked about won"t solve the problem because the additional pressure will still have to be built to unlock the valve. I"d try to get my hands on a set of hydraulic schematics and see exactly what your dealing with before spending money on any kind of metering device.

Thanks. I have traced the system, and there appear to be no external lock valve. I checked in the Case Service Manual, and there doesn't seem to be anything shown in the hydraulic circuit either.

Thanks again!
Greg
