Im in the market for my first dozer. I have no experience running one. Been around em on farm jobs quite a bit in the last few years. Looking for a machine mostly for tree clearing around farm fields, limited conservastion work (terraces) but with experience im sure Ill be more interested in tackling some of those projects. Ive been told by locals to stay with an old D6 to begin with. What do you guys think? Powershift or direct? I can haul 40-50K lbs myself so size isnt too limited. Not too concerened with a cab but limb risers and canopy I see as necessary safty equip. Im in NEKansas. The local contractors run Later model D8 is biggest in the area, 6s are common here with a few big fiats and a komatsu mixed in. So the question is, what am I looking for?? Not affraid to spend some money, crop prices are good dont ya know! LOL Thanks in advance.
Matt

If you'll be grading a 6 way blade sure makes it easier. If not, a JD450 loader with a backhoe can uproot and topple trees easy, and is easy to manuever through the trees you want to keep. I have an HD11 with a straight blade, so it takes a little planning to cut a road on a hill. I also have an IH500C loader with rippers, but I really wish I had the backhoe instead.

You know, size depends a lot on what you're planning on doing with it. When I was working in the oil fields (NE Ohio)D6 and D8 were for clearing and reclaiming sites, But I got a chance to borrow the company's JD550. Six gallons of fuel enabled me to clear 10a. of mucky, brush land for my dad, and open a clear ditch to the small farm pond he had. All this was done in under 10 hours
8 years ago my dad and I bought a Cat D4, and used it to enlarge his pond to about 1a. with a depth of 9' This D4 will up root and push over 80' trees

I worked for Gasearch, (notice I took my screen name from the Skytop Bruster drilling rigs)and before that was for Oil Field Services with Doug Susany, but thats been almost 30 years ago. Wish I could find a Cat Skinner job like I had there. Most enjoyable job I ever had!

Crop prices are good??? Watcha Growin'?? Wackie Tabackie ?? In my years of equipment repairing , I've seen some really nice looking machines out there being bought up by the "Newbi's"[ novices]..Fresh paint hides a multitude of sins.. I've come to believe that if a Caterpillar or any other brand is being sold , there's a problem somewhere with it..You just don't trade in or sell a machine in todays economy , unless there's something that really bothers you about it..Whether it be a weak or oil burning engine , or a transmission that slips after 8 hours and 33 seconds of use..Look it over real well...Better yet , take someone who really knows equipment.. Not just someone who has sat on Uncle Ralphs dozer once...Roy
