Can anyone advise on sump removal, JCB 3CX MK1 Leyland 4-98NT, it looks as though the front engine mounts bolt into the cast sump? Is this correct? If so, what's the best method of supporting the engine to take the sump off and have a look see?

A drawing of the sump from my manual here:

Unfortunately there are no instructions on sump removal in any of my manuals, just several references to remove the sump.

Thanks.

You may as well lift the engine out as if its spun a bearing the crank will need to be ground and will have to go to a grinding shop.

Thanks AJ, not sure why it's stuck, might have been overheated and a piston may be the culprit. It was full of oil and coolant the day she quit. Need to get a look and find out where to start, and what decision to make, new engine or rebuild.

I can"t find the drawing you posted,I"v had several of them sumps off and the only thing I remember is that a special offset socket was needed to undo the oil pump, weld two sockets side by side, one the correct size for the bolts, the oil pump has weights that act as balancers and need to be timed when fitting the pump, what"s wrong with the engine, you are going to a lot of trouble for a look-see,if you don"t need to go in there leave well enough alone.

Thanks AJ, the engine has turned a bearing or something, it's locked, but not solid, I can move the the flywheel slightly in either direction and the fan will move slightly in response. Figure it's easier to look in the bottom before pulling the head?
